Recently we had the opportunity to speak with Russian trance DJ duo and brothers Pavel & Vitaly Khvaleev aka Moonbeam. Read up on a lot of interesting things you may not have known about Moonbeam.
Hi Pavel and Vitaly, it’s a pleasure to chat with you guys! As this is your first interview with MaxMuzik, let’s start off with a little background. How did you get into music?
Hi! And hopefully not last :)
Well, it was 10 years ago. After working on some radio stations in Russia and writing music at home computer, we decided to move to more professional level. And since that time, Moonbeam already released more than 200 releases.
For our readers who’ve never heard your music, explain your sound in 5 words.
Conceptually, Dance, Live, Deep and Forever :)
Can you offer insight into some of your musical inspirations?
Back in the 90th, we were big fans of Daft Punk, Underworld, Prodigy, and Bjork. Later we discovered Royksoop, and this band influenced us and our perception of music. To date, we have discovered new and very talented artists, such as James Blake and Ellie Goulding. They do only what they want to do and they are not afraid to experiment.

You are releasing your fourth artist album “The Random” on Black Hole Recordings this month, how was the experience working on this album like for you?
First of all, “The Random” it’s a complete two-disc edition which full of Dance tracks and entirely experimental compositions. In this album we worked with a lot of various electronic and live instruments, as well as guest musicians from around the world. Among them, Andrea Roma, A * S * Y * S, Jacob A. This allowed us to use virtually all styles of music in the album. Since we set ourselves a task to dive into the creative process and to transmit mood of each track, and in the result we got a very deep, but at the same time relevant and interesting “music book”, consisting of two volumes.
You started your podcast “Moonbeam Music” last year, and you cover interesting track selection. How’s your experience so far and how do you pick your tracks for the show?
Everyday we listen a lot of promos and we trying to find some really interesting and exclusive stuff. In Moonbeam Music we trying to play music which is closest to us, so it’s possible to find in 1-hour podcast really different styles, ex. from slowly lounge to aggressive techno. Generally, during this time we mix about 15 or 16 tracks to show it as much as we can.

If you could open up for an artist right now, who would it be and why?
Kairo Kingdom. We think that this guys are pioneers in new style of electronic music called Glitch Hop and they have a big potential. Their tracks can be played both in a small clubs and at outdoor festivals.
Speaking of shows, what are you touring plans for 2013?
New album, our first movie. New gigs, new concerts and more.
What artists would fans be surprised to find on your iPod?
Lana Del Rey, James Blake, Delilah, 30 seconds to mars. Usually we listen not dance music, because it’s more melodic and allows to draw inspiration.
Any final thoughts or parting words?
Listen to good and quality stuff and may the force be with you. Good luck! :)
Thank you very much Pavel and Vitaly for your time, and keep up the amazing work!
